WEEKEND GUIDE FOR MAY

May.....time to get outside and do some stuff.  A few fun things I would like to do this month:

Jurassic Gardens

• When, Where, What: Jurassic Gardens at Powell Gardens (1609 N.W. U.S. Highway 50, Kingsville, MO). Journey back to the prehistoric world when more than 20 dinosaurs and oversized ancient insects return to Powell Gardens. The exhibit is designed by Guy Darrough, Missouri’s own self-taught paleontologist and artist. May 1 - Aug. 14. Garden admission applies: $9.50/adults, $8.50/seniors and $5/children 5-12. 816.697.2600 www.powellgardens.org
• Why We LOVE It: Jurassic Gardens is fun for the whole family! Powell Gardens is one of our favorite family outings, especially with the addition of the Heartland Harvest Garden and it's an annual tradition to attend the Butterfly Festival in August. With giant dinosaurs greeting us throughout the foliage, the fun is even bigger and better than before!

Sheep Shearing Days!
• When, Where, What: May 7, Missouri Town 1855. It’s Spring and the flock of sheep at Missouri Town will be sheared of their winter coat. Fiber artists will demonstrate the complete process of shearing, washing, carding, dying, spinning, weaving and knitting. Take a step back in time and enjoy these important skills of our ancestors. Adults, $5.00; Youth 5-13 and Seniors, $3.00; Under 5, Free . 816.503.4860 www.jacksongov.org
• Why We LOVE It:When we attended Missouri Town's Sheep Shearing Day last year, my first thought was, "I wish they would rename this event....it is MUCH more than Sheep Shearing and MUCH better than the name suggests!" It is "Sheep Shearing Day" because the focus of the day is on the fiber arts (shearing, dying, spinning, and weaving wool), but the festivities included many more fun and educational activities and our only regret after three hours at Missouri Town was that we didn't have MORE time to explore the village! We can't wait to go back this year! Read our review of last year's event.

Sprint Family Fun Day
• When, Where, What: May 21 from 11am-3pmat KC Power and Light District. Enjoy a Paul Mesner Puppet Show, Mr. Stinky Feet Concert, Art Activities, Music from Around the World, and MORE! Best of all... it's all FREE!
• Why We LOVE It: Live music, puppets, art... what's not to love? Rock n' Roll the day away with the entire family with Mr. Stinky Feet... PEEEEE UUUUU!

See more fun stuff to do at KC Parent.

SEEING POTENTIAL IN OTHERS

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“...Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out”
(Ephesians 6:18, The Message)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria
It’s easy to be someone’s friend when they’ve got it all together, when they’re walking in blessing and prosperity. Anybody can believe in people after they’re successful, after they graduate, after they’re promoted, after they get their big break. But, people need our support the most before they get their breakthrough. They need us to look past their faults and failures and see their potential.

Most times, people just need a little “push” of encouragement to keep them moving forward. We should always put ourselves in the other person’s shoes and see things from their perspective. You may have some good advice that could save them a lot of heartache and pain. Don’t keep it to yourself. Pick up the phone. Help them win. Maybe you excelled in a college course that they’re struggling in. Don’t sit back and think, “Too bad. They’ve got to learn it the hard way.” No, you are the hands and feet of Jesus. When you help others rise higher, you are fulfilling His mission. Today, share your love, support and encouragement. Invest life in others, see their potential, and together, you’ll rise higher into the blessing God has for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father God, thank You for giving me influence with the people in my life. Thank You for equipping me to help others rise higher. Reveal to me the potential You have deposited in the people around me and show me ways to help them so we can win at life together. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

SOUL-SPIRATION

"Sometimes you’ve got to let everything go - purge yourself. If you are unhappy with anything… whatever is bringing you down, get rid of it. Because you’ll find that when you’re free, your true creativity, your true self comes out." — Tina Turner

"You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it." — Maya Angelou

In the end
these things matter most:
How well did you love?
How fully did you live?
How deeply did you let go?
Siddhārtha Gautam

"When you rest in quietness and your image of yourself fades, and your image of the world fades, and your ideas of others fade, what’s left? A brightness, a radiant emptiness that is simply what you are." — Adyashanti

"You are like a candle. Imagine you are sending light out all around you. All your words, thoughts and actions are going in many directions. If you say something kind, your kind words go in many directions, and you yourself go with them. We are transforming and continuing in a different form at every moment." — Thich Nhat Hanh

YOGA TIME

I wish......
.....never going to happen.  If I got my body in this postion this is the way they would have to bury me, cause I would never get myself out of it.

8 simple ways we ALL practice yoga.

1. i pose. (asana)
I get on my mat and I strike a pose. There’s mountain pose, child pose, pigeon pose, happy baby pose, cat pose, lion pose, tree pose, bridge pose, triangle pose, hero pose. I bend backwards and forwards, I twist and bind, I push + pull, I hold and release, I flex and stretch. To put it simply, I move my body.
2. i breathe. (pranayama)
Sometimes it’s long and slow. Other times it’s fast and shallow. Sometimes I breathe through one nostril and out through the other. Some days I use my breath to detox and cleanse, other days I use it to cool me down. But I like it best when it sounds like the ocean and becomes my soundtrack. To put it simply, I inhale and exhale.
3. i sense. (pratyahara)
I feel sensations arising from moment to moment. They can be pleasant or unpleasant. Either way, my body is communicating with me and I’m finally starting to listen. I’m learning to trust her, because she’s the one that’s always here in the now.
4. i focus. (dharana)
I drop the distractions, I clear my mind and I concentrate. I forget about what just happened or what I need to do later. I drop it all so I can bring my mind to where my body is, the eternal now.
5. i observe. (dhyana)
I hold my seat and become the bare witness, the silent observer. It is here that there is no judgment, no attachment, and no reaction. I am aware.
6. i inquire. (niyama)
I keep an open mind. I question everything. I let go and make space for anything that is closer to the truth. I celebrate the mystery of life and embrace the art of not knowing. I dance to the beat of my own drum. I nourish my body and purify my mind. I indulge in radical self love and ignite my divine spark. But sometimes I get lost, and that’s totally okay.
7. i love. (yama)
I open my heart to give and receive. It’s filled with love, compassion, kindness, equanimity, and truth. Not always, but I’ve seen it many times before.
8. i bliss out. (samadhi)
When all of the above merge together in the exact same moment, magic happens. I am flooded with love, peace and joy. I am fully alive and awake. And most importantly, I remember.

10 THINGS SCIENCE SAYS WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY

1. Savor Everyday Moments

Pause now and then to smell a rose or watch children at play. Study participants who took time to “savor” ordinary events that they normally hurried through, or to think back on pleasant moments from their day, “showed significant increases in happiness and reductions in depression,” says psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky.
2. Avoid Comparisons
While keeping up with the Joneses is part of American culture, comparing ourselves with others can be damaging to happiness and self-esteem. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, focusing on our own personal achievement leads to greater satisfaction, according to Lyubomirsky.
3. Put Money Low on the List
People who put money high on their priority list are more at risk for depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, according to researchers Tim Kasser and Richard Ryan. Their findings hold true across nations and cultures. “The more we seek satisfactions in material goods, the less we find them there,” Ryan says. “The satisfaction has a short half-life—it’s very fleeting.” Money-seekers also score lower on tests of vitality and self-actualization.
4. Have Meaningful Goals
“People who strive for something significant, whether it’s learning a new craft or raising moral children, are far happier than those who don’t have strong dreams or aspirations,” say Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diener. “As humans, we actually require a sense of meaning to thrive.” Harvard’s resident happiness professor, Tal Ben-Shahar, agrees, “Happiness lies at the intersection between pleasure and meaning. Whether at work or at home, the goal is to engage in activities that are both personally significant and enjoyable.”
5. Take Initiative at Work
How happy you are at work depends in part on how much initiative you take. Researcher Amy Wrzesniewski says that when we express creativity, help others, suggest improvements, or do additional tasks on the job, we make our work more rewarding and feel more in control.
6. Make Friends, Treasure Family
Happier people tend to have good families, friends, and supportive relationships, say Diener and Biswas-Diener. But it’s not enough to be the life of the party if you’re surrounded by shallow acquaintances. “We don’t just need relationships, we need close ones” that involve understanding and caring.
7. Smile Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
It sounds simple, but it works. “Happy people…see possibilities, opportunities, and success. When they think of the future, they are optimistic, and when they review the past, they tend to savor the high points,” say Diener and Biswas-Diener. Even if you weren’t born looking at the glass as half-full, with practice, a positive outlook can become a habit.
8. Say Thank You Like You Mean It
People who keep gratitude journals on a weekly basis are healthier, more optimistic, and more likely to make progress toward achieving personal goals, according to author Robert Emmons. Research by Martin Seligman, founder of positive psychology, revealed that people who write “gratitude letters” to someone who made a difference in their lives score higher on happiness, and lower on depression—and the effect lasts for weeks.
9. Get Out and Exercise
A Duke University study shows that exercise may be just as effective as drugs in treating depression, without all the side effects and expense. Other research shows that in addition to health benefits, regular exercise offers a sense of accomplishment and opportunity for social interaction, releases feel-good endorphins, and boosts self-esteem.
10. Give It Away, Give It Away Now!
Make altruism and giving part of your life, and be purposeful about it. Researcher Stephen Post says helping a neighbor, volunteering, or donating goods and services results in a “helper’s high,” and you get more health benefits than you would from exercise or quitting smoking. Listening to a friend, passing on your skills, celebrating others’ successes, and forgiveness also contribute to happiness, he says. Researcher Elizabeth Dunn found that those who spend money on others reported much greater happiness than those who spend it on themselves.

PERFECTIONISM

"Perfectionism is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect, we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgment, and shame. It’s a shield. Perfectionism is a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact; it’s the thing that’s really preventing us from taking flight…at its core, is about trying to earn approval and acceptance."

HOME-SPIRATION

Total BoHo.  Love all the bright colored pillows.

I love the pic above with all the pottery lined up and together.

I think I have mentioned before about how much I adore green kitchen cabinets.  *heart*

Elegant.

Love the mix matched colors.  It all blends so well together.  I get a little freaked using so many colors in a room at my house, but this looks pretty cool.

I have some pots at my work by our garden and I am going to recreate a smaller version of this pot.  I love it.  Mixing plants & flowers in a pot total *heart*

Outdoor space. *heart*
